About the Author
Carol Jago has taught English in middle and high school for 32 years, is immediate past president of the National Council of Teachers of English, and serves as an associate director of the California Reading and Literature Project at UCLA. Carol served as AP Literature content advisor for the College Board and has published six books for teachers with Heinemann. She has also published four books on contemporary multicultural authors for NCTE's High School Literature series. Carol has written a weekly education column for the Los Angeles Times, and her essays have appeared in English Journal, Language Arts, NEA Today, as well as in other newspapers across the nation. Great book on teaching writing!

The cover of this book doesn't really draw one to it, but don't let it deceive you. This book was written by an English teacher and not only does she share her philosophy on writing, but she shares numerous ideas on how to get kids to write and write well. One of the ideas she has to help write a persuasive essay, is to have students go through a newspaper and cut out five articles, editorials or whatever, that interest the student. Choose one of the articles as inspiration for your persuasive paper. When writing about literature, she has the students use a reflection chart (included in the book) to help them organize their thoughts for their paper. Another writing assignment involves using scented cotton balls (perfume, disinfectent, or air freshener) to help students write about a setting influenced by that smell. An inspiring and interesting read.

According to David Mamet, a film director must, above all things, think visually. Most of this instructive and funny book is written in dialogue form and based on film classes Mamet taught at Columbia University. He encourages his students to tell their stories not with words, but through the juxtaposition of uninflected images. The best films, Mamet argues, are composed of simple shots. The great filmmaker understands that the burden of cinematic storytelling lies less in the individual shot than in the collective meaning that shots convey when they are edited together. Mamet borrows many of his ideas about directing, writing, and acting from Russian masters such as Konstantin Stanislavsky, Sergei M. Eisenstein, and Vsevelod Pudovkin, but he presents his material in so delightful and lively a fashion that he revitalizes it for the contemporary reader.

Noted playwright, screenwriter, and director Mamet offers his views on film directing taken, some in transcript form, from lectures and classes at Columbia. With only two films under his belt, Mamet is an odd choice to publish his opinions here, and his ideas are unsurprising. Although presumably being paid by Columbia, Mamet "suspects" film schools are "useless." Citing his heroes Eisenstein (story via cuts) and Hitchcock (pre-planning), he advises shooting scenes simply in the "least interesting way" possible and cutting everything extraneous to the story. He suggests reading in myth and psychology and watching a lot of animated cartoons. Refreshingly untheoretical, particularly regarding acting technique, this is fitfully interesting stuff, but a bit of an ego trip, too.

rigid, but important

After reading screenplay books for years -- the likes of Syd Field, McKee, Howard, Hunter, etc. -- Mamet is a refreshing change. I realized how the other books, for all intents and purposes, were analyses of scripts, avoiding or skirting the issues of method and process. In other words, it's not hard to look at a huge box office and critically-acclaimed hit (Chinatown being the consensus favorite) and explain what makes it so good. We all know it's good. We've seen the movie. We've read the script. We're all in awe. And we all know the elements. But the actual process of writing, of formulating a story visually, of actually creating instead of merely analyzing, seems to be an afterthough to these folks. I mean, in some way, you've got to ask yourself why these fellas -- McKee, Field, and others -- have never actually written a thing! Mamet espouses a simplicity to the process of storytelling in film, beat by beat. It's a bit repetitive and sterile, as is the man himself. I don't agree with him on everything, and neither will you. He contradicts himself all the time and seems to take delight in his own presence, but he is a great craftsman, and anyone looking to tell stories visually would be mistaken to think this book unimportant or trivial. A must read for aspiring filmmakers, especially those who write.

Mamet is always Mamet. Even when talking about directing-- after having directed only two films, HOUSE OF GAMES and THINGS CHANGE. Never heard of 'em, you say? Yes, this book is taken from a series of lectures he gave at Columbia film school in 1990. Since then, Mamet has directed Steve Martin not to be funny (THE SPANISH PRISONER) and Gene Hackman not to be cool (HEIST) as well as other actors not to "inflect."
Most people, like me, love Mamet's writing but find his directing stilted and wooden. This book explains why. Written half as rant and half as Socratic dialogue, Mamet lays out his film theory with second-rate Sergei Eisenstein (I think he means Kuleshov) and third-rate Bruno Bettelheim (who wrote about fairy tales, not film). The result is a mixed bag, not too informative about directing, but always entertaining.
If you want to know why telling a story on film is like telling a dirty joke, this is your book. If you'd like to read how to construct a movie about a farmer who has to sell a pig, or a student who wants to "get a retraction," this is your book. If you want to know why "[t]he less the hero is described to us, the better off we are," this is your book. It's slim, it reads fast, and it's easier to understand than THE THREE USES FOR A KNIFE. If you want a book about directing by a real director, I recommend Sidney Lumet's MAKING MOVIES.

Buy this book. It's worth it.

I have found this book to be of great use. I have highlighted much of the text and have been assimilating it since it came out in hardcover. Technology is evolving toward consumer movie making and this book can serve as a point of departure for anyone with a video camera and a desire to tell stories but no pressing desire to become a part of "the industry". His technique is admittedly rigid but is simple to understand. When one honestly and patiently applies the technique in order to conceive a story outline, the results--since the unconscious is employed instead of the ego--can be quite enchanting. This book aims toward a more poetic cinema. I highly recommend it.

The only misstep in Dahl's corpus of children's books

The Roald Dahl stories still speak to adult kids like me. However, I've noted that this sequel to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is the only weak link in his otherwise excellent corpus of children's books.

I will just offer my brief impressions of this book.

This story is made up of two halves. The first half focuses on the journey back to the factory. The Elevator links up with a space hotel and Mr Wonka and the Buckets are chased by Vermicious Knids. Once they are back at the factory the story changes gear to talk about the abuses of Wonkavite by the grandparents. The Elevator links both halves of the book because it is used for all the journeys that Charlie makes. However this does not disguise the fact that this book has two distinct halves that do not cohere together.

The writing style is laboured here and lacks freshness. Also, the jokes come off as lame and feeble. Only Willy Wonka holds the book together.

As such, this book is not quite as compelling and coherent as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

It Is Just Terrible

I enjoy Roald Dahl stories, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is certainly a favorite of mine. Published in 1972, the first part clearly was influenced by the at-that-time recent Apollo missions. This would not have been a bad thing per se, but the story he chose to tell as Charlie and company were in space was, simply put, boring. Here he had this wonderful opportunity with the space hotel to create another fantastic environment for adventure and amazing things to happen and instead he gives us a boring hotel in space and a goofy president of the United States. Some of the characters, such the grandparents, were not written the same was the first book and were instead whining the whole time. In the end, this book adds nothing to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. It reads as a completely different story with Charlie and the gang inserted into it as an afterthought.

GREAT BOOK

My 9 year old loved this book and is asking for more books from this Author. She read this in school with her class and since next year we are homeschooling maybe these other books would be great for book reports? Anyway I think these are great for kids around 9 and up.
This book is about what happened after Charlie won the factory. IF you want to know what all it is about I just can't spoil it for you but I will tell you it has something to do with space..

Pilkey's illustrations are half the fun, and that magical moment when the hypnotized Principal Krupp dons his Captain Underpants uniform and sings "Tra-La-Laaaaaaaa" is priceless. Krupp is a worthy successor to Lamar J. Spurgle, the nemesis of "the Cut-Ups" in James Marshall's great picture books. The "kneel here" sign in front of his desk says it all. Kid Appeal Award: Superheroes are always fascinating to kids. And children of a certain age will laugh at anything that has to do with underpants. Combining the two was a stroke of comic genius.

The story is a superhero spoof: two misbehaving fourth-grade boys, Harold and George, hypnotize their school principal and turn him into their comic book creation, Captain Underpants. The boys have their hands full when the captain escapes and starts chasing bad guys in his underwear. The extra leading and slightly enlarged typeface make for easier reading, but the silliness goes overboard (picture villainous Dr. Diaper staring at a pile of rubber doggy doo), and the many action-packed illustrations rob the plot of some of its zip by commanding more than their share of attention. (The flip book pages seem clever, but they're really just a tease). ''--and ultimately the evil Dr. Diaper. Distracting Dr. Diaper with some ``fake doggy doo- doo,'' the boys save the planet, then hustle Krupp back into his clothes, just in time for--their next adventure, The Attack of the Talking Toilets, coming soon. Pilkey's stubby black-and-white cartoon figures appear on every page but can be animated in one chapter, thanks to ``Flip-O-Rama,'' where readers flip pages back and forth for the ``latest in cheesy animation technology.'' Turned My Son into a Reader

My eight year old son is a very reluctant reader and would not pick up a chapter book. After putting Dav Pilkey's debut novel tot he Captain Underpants series my son was made a fan. The next day we had to go on a quest to find everything else written by Dav Pilkey. Now, my son will go through a book in under an hour. The goofy humor of the story alongside the graphic components makes for a winner in the hands of a young boy. Author Dav Pilkey's sharing of his own struggles as a student also makes kids feel connected to this author.

The authors, Bishop David G. Evans and Danielle Horner, have done an exceptional job creating Healed Without Scars: the Study Companion! A true labor of love! This book powerfully encapsulates Bishop David G. Evans' message in Healed Without Scars, the book. This companion will seize anyone's attention. It is visually appealing and beautifully designed. The pages are laid out in such a way to allow the reader sufficient space for note-taking. This companion has been "carved" in a user-friendly fashion - it is brilliantly and compassionately written, and is non-intimidating to the reader, Christian and non-Christian alike. You will find a limitless abundance of God's awesome Truth in every page you turn!! Using this companion will provide immeasurable and valuable guidance on your journey to healing. By following through and answering the questions posed, I was able to discover areas of my life that required more of God, and this study companion marks a very clear path on how to attain "more of God - less of me." Equally as engaging as Bishop Evans' book, the Study Companion to Healed Without Scars does not disappoint. Buyer beware, this is not the run-of-the-mill, fill-in-the-blank workbook! This is a WORK book, meaning roll up your sleeves and dig in! Be prepared to do some serious work on your soul. The author skillfully transitioned the original text into a step-by-step guide to "spiritual surgery", a way for you to allow God to come in and remove your self-applied spiritual "band-aids," cleanse and repair your wounds, and make you whole without blemish. The Study Companion complements Healed Without Scars brilliantly. Unlike similar workbooks, it does not merely regurgitate the book; on the contrary, the Study Companion hones in on each of Bishop Evans' points, chapter by chapter and offers challenging questions and life application to you. With plenty of space provided for your own notes and thoughts, the author encourages introspection and reflection. The Healed Without Scars Study Companion is a wonderful forum to meet with God and find freedom from the hurts of your past. I offer my highest recommendation to anyone seeking wholeness!
