Keystone book, essential practice text after having some statistical theory

I bought this text after using and learning about Professor Harrell's contributions through the literature and through the R and S computing communities. Others have written how wonderful Professor Harrell's software is to use, and how carefully he has thought about the entire cycle of doing statistics, including transparent analyses and publication using LaTeX.

But the book is a joy, balancing theoretical concerns, a masterful selection of literature, and solid assessments and presentations of actual examples. Professor Harrell demonstrates how powerful these techniques are, and the material moving them. These insights are key in a time when increasingly people want to just dump numbers into a package and get something out of it, an analytical behavior often justified by cost and time pressures. (If it's wrong results you want, it's trivially easy to get those, even if they LOOK wrong.) Professor Harrell shows it needn't be that hard, with tools from the CRAN (the R community source), many good ones which he and colleagues contributed. But he also shows that it's important to keep an eye on the parts of these, and be wary of pitfalls.

Professor Harrell is also candid in his assessments, even after giving enthusiasts for a technique he critiques the benefit of the doubt. I find his comparison of cross-validation with bootstrap validation wonderful, and his discussion of standard assessments of models like R^2 refreshing.

Exceptionally well-written text

I found "Regression Modeling Strategies" to be a fantastic treatment of a wide assortment of model selection techniques. Harrell's writing style is quite lucid (assuming you've had graduate-level statistics coursework). Model selection/validation is arguably the most critical component of the statistical literature for many industry statisticians, and it is rare to find a textbook solely devoted to the merging of theory with practice. This is not to discredit other applied statistical texts; they represent a necessary foundation to master before a text like Harrell's can be understood with any depth.

It is often said that "All models are wrong but some are useful". To that I would follow with, "In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king". Harrell's text will help empower you as a statistical modeler. Personally, I think combining this book with Gelman and Hill's "Data Analysis" text creates about as good of a 1-2 punch that an applied statistician will ever find.

Great practical advice for modelers

My initial temptation is to say this is the best statistics text ever, but it's all relative. It perfectly suits my current needs and state of development. The book claims to be intended for graduate level students in biostatistics and I think that is a fair assessment (I am self-taught, so how am I to know?).

I haven't even finished yet, but I am reading the text cover-to-cover after first perusing parts of chapter 10. This linear approach is facilitated by Prof. Harrell's excellent writing style.

The text has a practical bent, but with plenty of theory and references to back up the practical advice. You may find Harrell's views to be controversial. I have been forced to reconsider many of my notions about model-building.

I note that "r programming language" is a suggested tag for this product. While Harrell's Design and Hmisc packages are available to R users, the text actually refers to the use of S-PLUS and there may be subtle distinctions. As a Stata user, they're both alien to me, but this hasn't affected my enjoyment of the book.

Excellent start for anyone who may be interested in starting to try to understand the Monarchy in the U.K. Giving overviews of each ruler along with the "side notes" reminders is a great way to learn about the ideas and the time frame of what life was like durning each ruler.
You don't have to sit through 400 pages about each ruler or have to disect each King or Queen's greatest battles to understand who they were.

Dummies finally have hit every area with their books. I'm glad someone thought to include the British Monarchy .

Using examples from polar expeditions, aviation history, undersea voyages, and space missions, Claude A. Piantadosi shows that exploration is unforgiving to those who fail to plan. Piantadosi details the barriers that must be surmounted for humans to leave Earth for long voyages. Claude A. Piantadosi MD is professor and director of the F. G. Hall Environmental Laboratory at Duke University. Educated at the University of North Carolina–Chapel Hill and the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, he trained in undersea medicine and saturation diving in the U.S. Navy and in respiratory physiology and pulmonary medicine at Duke. He spent thirty years as a resource consultant to NASA. He is an author of more than three hundred scientific papers and The Biology of Human Survival: Life and Death in Extreme Environments.

A brilliant and fascinating science lesson, loosely organized around space exploration

I loved this book, but you may not. The author is a scientist of broad interest who tells you much more than you need to know to weigh alternative ideas for exploring outer space. For example, there are four ways to die from lack of oxygen and the book gives concise but thorough descriptions of the physiology of each one. Someday an astronaut may have a heart attack (ischemia) in space, or die from cytotoxic or stagnant hypoxia due to disease or genetic defect. But you'd think a book on space travel would concentrate on not having oxygen because space is a vacuum and other planets don't have oxygen atmospheres and maybe your spaceship or spacesuit sprang a leak or your oxygen recycling system broke down (hypoxic hypoxia, if you’re keeping track). The book has a similarly comprehensive account of how radiation affects tissues instead of describing only the most significant short-term dangers of cosmic rays outside the Van Allen belt.

It’s not just physiology that gets this treatment, the author will launch into general discussions of physics, chemistry, geology, scientific history or anything else that interests him with the least excuse. Ever wondered about how we got those International Geophysical and International Polar years? Or what the “Antarctic stare” is? Then this is the book for you. But if you’re looking for a focused discussion of the technology of space travel, you might get frustrated. Think of a late-night rambling discussion with a very smart guy who has thought a lot about exploration of outer space, who has a strong pedantic streak that is tolerable because he actually knows what he’s talking about and it’s interesting stuff.

Another feature of this book that will not be universally popular but that I liked, is the author has strong opinions and little patience for alternative views. Exploration means sending humans, and the only path worth considering is developing self-sustaining resources and capabilities like permanent low-Earth orbit facilities, a moon base, methodologies for extended living without resupply and mining, processing, reprocessing and disposal technologies to manage physical resources off-Earth. Space should be explored because that’s what humans do, and maybe a little for what we will learn, but it will not be valuable as a permanent place to live. You will learn why the author holds these opinions, but not much about why others may disagree (attractive ideas the author doesn’t wish to discuss are labeled “mind candy” and left at that).

The writing style is clear and vigorous, with a distinctive voice. My only gripe is the author is overfond of silly acronyms and tables that could use better design and any point at all. This is a book that will teach you a lot about a lot of things, and will be a pleasure to read for those who like to learn without worrying about whether there is any use to the learning.

An excellent mix of topics

I am a huge reader of science texts. I've read all the popular books and I like to delve into the less well known. I've honestly never heard of Professor Piantadosi nor have I read his work before.

The author looks at the history of space exploration and the barriers facing us in the future. As he says, space travel is not just about technology, it also about biology. He makes the point more than once that it is also about finances and politics. He starts off showing the passion of the people who made it to the moon and explains the difficulties they faced.

As we go through the book, he explains the importance of sustenance, waste removal, air for breathing, propulsion, distances, the effects of radiation on physiology and technology and so much more. Who will be the people exploring, what will they explore and how will they do it.

Some people may not like his style of writing. Like many scientific texts, it's written in a mostly informal essay style. While everything he says is related, he tends to jump around a bit. In the space of just a few pages, he explains the measurements we'll use in space (not just KM and light-year but AU and parsec), biomedicine, stress and the effects of radiation. Stuck in there is a great discussion of the people who live above 12,000 feet and how they have adapted to that life.

I say same people may not like it, but I found the entire thing to be fascinating. I've never seen some of the concepts explained as well as the author does it. There are a lot of topics I have never seen addressed for the layman.

This book is sort of like National Geographic for the Space Explorer. Maybe even a little popular mechanics thrown in for good measure. I really enjoyed it and recommend it to anyone who likes general space science. Give it a few chapters to decide whether nor not to finish. If you can make it to chapter 3, you'll have a good feel for his writing. I found it to be a bit quirky but, in the end, a great way to approach so many topics. Space travel really is complicated, more so than many people believe.

Book not well post-examined and verified. Work problems at the end of each chapter only had answers to a few of the work problems, so students cannot check their work. In addition, the answer section for the work problems is incorrect because the answers to a certain problem are noted under another problem. Example: answer to question 5 is actually printed under question 6 and the answer posted for question 5 is actually the answer for question 4. Ridiculous! I would not buy this book again.

Dominant Cleansing Techniques

Why give this book a one star review,just because something sounds disgusting to you? On the other hand: The countless benefits have been known in various ancient tribes and in certain esoteric circles for centuries. Something that's of pertinent value should never be knocked; just because a person chooses to not try something that has been tested for eons. Though each individual makes their own choice don't give an extremely low review if you haven't even first tried the method. This book is worth even more than giving it just 5 stars! How about 100 stars!!!

this is a very insightful yet fundamentally "simple" book. It shows how one can create healing through the natural process of the body in a way that you wouldnt think about or really know but then when read it seams common sense.

About the Author
Alan Dean Foster has written in a variety of genres, including hard science fiction, fantasy, horror, detective, western, historical, and contemporary fiction. He is the author of the New York Times bestseller Star Wars: The Approaching Storm and the popular Pip & Flinx novels, as well as novelizations of several films including Star Wars, the first three Alien films, and Alien Nation. His novel Cyber Way won the Southwest Book Award for Fiction in 1990, the first science fiction work ever to do so. Foster and his wife, JoAnn Oxley, live in Prescott, Arizona, in a house built of brick that was salvaged from an early-twentieth-century miners’ brothel. He is currently at work on several new novels and media projects.

Excellent story, ok novel.

When I was growing up in the 80's, Transformers were my favorite toy line and the Tranformers cartoon was my favorite cartoon. As an adult, I find my kids are still into the current iteration of the toy, so I hold this film franchise (that's actually what Michael Bay has called it) to be quite a bit more sacred than other comic movies such as X-Men, Fantastic Four, Spiderman, etc. To me those are great action flicks, but for me Transformers needed to be something more. If the movie follows this book as it should, then I will certainly not be disappointed; but I could see how long time fans might be a bit let down with certain details.

So beyond this point I'm writing a "spoiler free" section and then below that I will detail some more specific info. In neither section will I give away: the ending, who dies, any major turn of events in the plot, etc... However, in both I will talk generally about: flow, character development, general comparisons between what's in this story and what was in the story of the 80's Transformers cartoon.

Before getting into content, I will say that I'm not a huge fan of Alan Dean Foster. I will go light on him because he was given the task to transform a screen play into a novel. He is the reason I give this 4 stars and not 5. I realize his task required him to write inside a box, and to be fair I don't think I've found a novel based on a screen play that I would give five stars to. Still, I felt as if here just as in Alan's prequel Transformers novel "Ghosts of Yesterday", the book seems quickly written and often goes a bit stale in creating imagery. There were times when I just wished I had a copy of the screen play. That's all I'm going to say about his writing style. So on to the review.

First, the book is full of action, but if you're wanting action every five minutes with no plot, then you may be let down. While I'm not sure how the movie will be (Bay might be going after a completely different style here), if the movie follows the book it's going to flow very much like other Michael Bay blockbusters such as Armageddon and The Rock. I feel Michael Bay does an excellent job at blending character development with action, and keeping a consistent pace, but if you don't like Bay's past work, my guess is you will not like the flow of the Trasnformers movie.

If you take the number of pages to this book: 291 and calculate it out for a two hour and twenty minute film (that's a rough guess) there will likely be a very detailed action sequence happening once every 10-15 minutes in the movie (think: Independence Day in term of pace) with the last 30 minutes of the film most likely being almost non-stop action.

Comparing the general story in this book to the Transformers television show, the biggest difference is that the story is told here from a human perspective. While I'm sure this change will upset long time fans, the truth is it makes for much better story telling to relate to people through human characters, this is true of all good science fiction writing. In terms of movies, Spielberg certainly lives by this rule and it works and it works here as well. In a cartoon geared for kids, it's easy to tell the story from the robots perspective, but the cartoon never tried to pull off what this story does, that is (within limits) make you believe Transformers are real for its duration and regarding personality: the Transformers most certainly have it in the book. It's expressed not only through what they say, [LIGHT SPOILERS AHEAD] although there is a good bit of English language communication between Transformers and their dialog is not dry. They are treated as non-organic alien robots with greater than human intelligence able to communicate with us and with full understanding of our technology and how to manipulate it.

As far as the story goes: there are essentially three sets of characters that are apparently not connected in any way (at the beginning of the story anyway) that the story follows and in the movie I assume (in Michael Bay style). We'll see a lot of transitions between these three sets of characters as the three story lines become one. So you have a military group stationed in desert of Qatar with a lead character. You have another group at the Pentagon in Washington with a few lead characters and then you have civilians: Sam "Spike", his friends and family. The most character development goes to Sam as he is really the lead in this story and it's with Sam and his friend Mikaela that we find character growth in this story. We also find a bit of growth (although less pronounced) in Optimus Prime and Bumblebee).

Essentially three plots start out independant and sort of weave together, but it's handled very well. It works and it makes for a real page turner, which I think will translate into a very fast paced movie. If you imagine the grander of Independence Day in terms of special effects "WOW" factor and pace; combine that with the great emotional connection to characters that Spielberg typically brings you get the idea. No, this is not ET or A.I. redone, we're probably not going to see that depth of emotional attachment to characters, but there will probably be more audience emotional attachment to some of these characters than any other Michael Bay film to date and I'm including the non-fans who have no investment going in. It's going to be a great movie, potentially Michael Bay's best film.

This is exactly the kind of story I was hoping for, something more mature than the cartoon I remembered as I kid, yet something accessible to older children. This is probably going to get a PG-13 rating and not aimed at younger kids. There's going to be a bit of sexual innuendo, there's going to be some death of humans and Transformers. Some of the Transformers with personalities will die very violent deaths in this story, so if you're a parent know that this may not be suitable for younger kids.

If you're a die-hard fan feeling like you got cheated. Well, I understand the pain of having something you care so much about be changed by a big budget. But what's really to say? You got your movie back in 1985. That's been done. Regardless of who handled it, Transformers would have had to have gotten an update and a major change in perspective to grow beyond a novelty flick. If it's going to be big budget it has to have mass appeal and I feel this story has that appeal. I think it has the appeal to do what the X-Men movie has done for the comic and what Smallville has done for the Superman comic, that is- give the series a new [better] origin story and a fresh direction. Overall it paid enough respect to the 80's cartoon to make me happy.

[SPOILERS BELOW]
Someone else said Megatron doesn't even show up until the end.... Well, that's true, but there is a very good reason for it. It's a key element in the plot and I think it not only makes sense it works well. You have to keep in mind Transformers is a planned as a trilogy by Dreamworks, this is the first part of a bigger story (they are working on the script to the two sequals right now). But even at that, there's so much going on, we don't need to see Megatron right away.

I love the way the autobots are treated and Bumblebee in especially is very funny and comes to life in a unique way. The rumor has been that he can not speak and while that's true (sort of true), I think what they've done with his communication is very entertaining and cool. The way the relationship between spike and bumblebee is built up is perfect for this story and something they will probably build on in the sequels.

If I could change a few things: I think there should have been more a dynamic between Megatron and Optimus Prime. I would have shown some backstory on Cybertron. This is something they may build on in sequels, but it's not in this story. Also I wish they would have started on Cybertron or at least brought a space view of Cybertron in. In the book we never "see" Cybertron. However, the book does start in space so there is hope for the movie to include Cybertron in the opening shots. Generally, I wish Megatron would have a been a gun. Generally, I have no problem with the reworking/modernizing of the Transformer robots and their disguise modes. Coming into the story I did have a bit of a problem with it, but the thing is, this story is its own thing. It's still very much the Transformers story fans will know at core, but it' also very different from the 80's cartoon.

The book is roughly 300 pages and the big finale occurs in the last 50 pages, accounting for big special effects sense. That means the last the intense action at the end of the movie will be the last 15-30 minutes of the film.... While I'm fine with that, I did feel a bit unsatisfied with the ending. I won't give away who dies, but I will say a major character is apparently dead at the end of the movie... While not a cliff hanger like the second Matrix movie or X2, the Transformers book does end with you expecting a sequel.

I think people who love action movies; the people who never read an X-Men or Spiderman comic, but love the movies will also love Transformers as a great live-action film adaption. I found myself caring very little for example, that Soundwave is not in the movie and that Frenzy is a very strange alien looking thing. If you're worried about the characters changing, I say just give this a chance and don't expect an G1 movie, it's just a new interpretation of the Transformers story and I pretty good one at that.

This story feels very much like the first act of a bigger story.

4-star sci-fi tale, plus 1 star for managing to do it with awful source material

Did you see the "Transformers" movie and feel an overwhelming sense of disappointment? Did you think that a story with giant alien robots from another planet should be a bit more... cooler? Were you wishing they would have cut a lot of the useless scenes and spent more time on the dialog and characters and interactions? I did, and this book was the story I wanted to see.

The jerky pacing is smoothed out, the multiple story lines (which didn't get enough screen time in the movie to be useful) are detailed out here and actually serve a purpose. The characters have more depth and better senses of humor. Things that frankly did not make sense in the movie are given reasonable, coherent explanation by the author. And that laughable technobabble which had my programmer boyfriend groaning in the theater was simply cut. In short, Alan Dean Foster took a really bad screenplay and made a really good sci-fi yarn from it. (The only thing I miss is the fantastic ILM transformation effects which get scant description in the book, maybe because the author didn't get to see what they looked like?)

I don't know how it will play to the Transformers fanboys, since I never was one (I was playing with My Little Pony at the time), but I highly recommend that people give this a try. Hey, it cost less than my movie ticket and I enjoyed it a lot more.

Not bad for a tie-in

As far as movie tie-ins go, this one isn't bad. There's no rambling internal monologues or shocking details about the characters that are missing from the screen and the integrity of the story is intact. This novel compliments the movie quite well.
