Good for filling in the gaps
By M. Creese
Wrote the GMAT twice before turning to this book after I wrote the exam the second time. Prior to this I had used GMAT Prep, the GMAT Prep additional question pack 1, the Official Guide, the Manhattan set of 8 strategy guides, and of course practice tests.

My biggest criticism of this book is that the difficulty levels, even for the so-called 'Challenge' problems, don't get that high. Manhattan GMAT quant questions can be brutal, often harder than many actual GMAT questions because they tend to be heavy on calculation in addition to being tricky. As a result, MGMAT has rightly developed a reputation for being the go-to choice for practicing quant. TGMATM problems seem pretty basic by comparison and a little too easy.

TGMATM adds value in two areas: repetitive drills that drive certain points home and its innovative coverage of minor question types. These drill questions are often pretty simple, but they make doing certain types of calculations second-nature while helping you get a 'fingertip feel' for certain kinds of manipulations. Weighted averages, permutations and combinations come to mind.

Even after all the prep I had done prior to picking up TGMATM, there were still quite a few 'Aha!' moments because this book has a knack for demystifying minor question types and trick questions that can be solved in any of several ways but defy ready categorization, as well as taking novel approaches to topics I thought I already had a pretty good handle on. It's a testament to the value of returning to the basics without simply passively reviewing tired old flash cards.

To me its real value lies either in filling in the gaps for someone who has been around the block already, or serving as the foundation for more rigorous GMAT prep if you're fresh out the gate.

It's not a bad place to start, and it's a pretty good place to fine-tune, but it is NOT comprehensive and all-encompassing, which I think was supposed to be the goal.

The most complete GMAT Math Guide hands down but not very friendly
By GMAT Club (Expert)
I am the founder of GMAT Club and top 1000 reviewer on Amazon - I have seen a lot of GMAT books and also reviewed pretty much all of them. This is a single most complete book that includes everything you need to get a solid score on the quant (you should also get the OG 12, and the author recommends it as well). It is also not a book that just came out of nowhere, Total GMAT math has been available as an ebook for about 4 years now and I am glad to see it is finally available in the print format. However, it does assume a greater level of general math knowledge as well as commitment than most GMAT books - that's what you get with a comprehensive book

The get the most of this book: 1) Read the first intro chapters including the one on "how to use this book" 2) Take each suggestion seriously 3) Make your own notes in a separate notebook 4) Always time yourself with a timer and keep a GMAT error log

Strengths:
- 300+ GMAT style questions
- Good explanations with diagrams
- The book is writen as an instruction manual with many insights and tips n the chapters/explnations
- Over 500 Exercises (non-gmat style questions)
- Covers all topics test on the gmat including probabilyt, statistics, etc without going too far
- Each question are gets a section (inequalities, absolute value, work problems, etc)
- Includes 100 of 700+ questions
- Good strategy suggestions including focusing on concepts rather than solving thousands of questions, writing question information down, and mental math concepts
- Good paper and formulas are done well

Weaknesses:
- The chapters are structured in a slightly unorthodox pattern. The book starts with algebra, then goes into geometry, then work problems, and then number properties. I felt that moving number properties closer to the beginning of the book would make more sense. I also felt the chapters were a bit choppy (only a few pages long) but that's my preference
- Could be intimidating: the text is very tightly packed with just a handful of illustrations. (see my uploaded image for details)
- No highlighting or a summary sheet - would be great to have formulas or key concepts highlighted on pages or at the end of the book
- Copyright and website address on every page - gets a bit old and distracting
- No OG recommendations table - would be helpful to have a list of questions from the OG for additional practice after each chapter
- Table of content is not usable (11 pages)

Bottom line: This is the ultimate book for math on the GMAT. If you are looking for a 50 on the quant, this is the book to get. However, this may be too much for some who are not seeking to spend 6 weeks on this book. Let not the price scare you - it is on the low side of what other prep companies charge for the entire math book set.

***Other thoughts***
5 Most Common Mistakes with GMAT preparation
1: Rushing to take tests before learning anything - do take a diagnostic test, but stop right there
2: Starting with the Official Guide and wasting of official GMAT questions
3: Giving GMAT the worst time of the day - studying after a long day at work
4: Skipping basics and rushing to advanced topics
5: Starting to prepare with poor English proficiency

Let me know any questions about this book - I reply to comments

big time Quant improvement!
By Rachel
I ordered this book to prepare for a GMAT retake. I went from 580 to 640 (Q34 to Q40) in one month of prep (I know I'm not a 700+ genius scorer, so I don't know how useful this is for those super high-level students out there) and I have this book to thank. Mr. Sackmann has a way of explaining the problems without being wordy or confusing - his language made things click, especially in the probablilty and combination/permutation sections. Each section offers an explanantion (including basics, how often the type of problem appears in the test, useful tricks, etc), then a 'drill' section followed by practice word problems and a challenge if appropriate.

The layout makes it easy to focus on your weak areas and there are plenty of practice questions to help raise your ability level. The drills are particularly useful if, like me, you sometimes screw up a problem not due to misunderstanding the question or not knowing HOW to solve it, but in the actual solving. I made remarkably fewer math errors after completing every drill.
It took me about a week to work through it, averaging 2-3 hours a day. However, I would also recommend the OG as the question styles are a bit different than what the GMAT would ask.

The only thing I would change is the spacing of the text. I like working the problems on the page and would have loved a little more scratchwork space. But the content is fantastic and a great way to polish your quant skills!

Almost as Engrossing as it is Frustrating
By John Farago
An important resource for experienced and serious cooks, this cookbook is simultaneously engrossing and infuriating. Organized in a manner that follows the structure of Ducasse's actual cooking school in three large divisions -- Easy, Medium, and Difficult, there's no easy upfront way to scan the recipes by content. I mean, how many times does one sit down and say, "I think i'd like a plate of something of intermediate difficulty as the main course for this party."? By similar token there are thousands of photos, but the vast majority are not much larger than enthusiastic postage stamp commemoratives, and the reproduction and relatively substantial distance from which the photos are often taken makes it very difficult to figure out what they are presenting unless you study the text closely and try to work backwards to see what the photo might be.

And the text, while precise, is often not terribly clear. Do you easily visualize what it means to say, "Overturn a deep container on parchment paper. Arrange the skewers on top of the overturned container, letting their ends extend past both sides."?

The indexes are helpful but also opaque. That quotation above is from a recipe for Chocolate Caramel Chestnuts. Trying to find it to come back to it for this review, I recalled that it was a chestnut paste confection, but little else. I could skim the entire book, or perhaps the Difficult section (since I recalled that as well), but looking in the Alphabetical index I got nowhere because the primary ingredient (chestnut) is not the first word. So there's an index by type of dish. But is this a Dessert & Pastry? Or a Dessert, Plated? or a Dessert, Shared? Or a Confectionery?

Well, there's an Index by Ingredient. But it doesn't zero in as finely as Chestnut Paste, so you have to settle for Chestnut. When you go there all it lists are three page numbers, without any names. There are also indexes by cooking utensil and by cooking time.

There is no Foreword or Afterword, no description of the book's strategy or goals; indeed no description of who wrote it (within the book there are four chefs' b biographies at the very end, near the copyright information, none of whom is in fact Alain Ducasse; and almost all of the recipes include chefs' tips (presumably from one of these four).

As an accompaniment to courses at Ducasse's cooking school, it makes a great documentation. And it makes quite a wonderful resource if you're willing to sit down and simply read it even though there is nothing anecdotal or engaging about the prose style. You can find many recipes worth trying, and perhaps make a list of them so that as occasions that might suit one or another arise you can tickle your memory and try one or more of them out.

I'm really glad I bought it, though it's incredibly frustrating that this very same collection of recipes could be so much more useful if presented in a different manner. And it's surely no school all by itself. The basic techniques section comes in an Appendix at the end. The recipes as presented don't connect in a way that invites you to generalize skill or experience acquisition if you simply cook them in order (each of the three sections is organized around category of dish not around instructional goal; but without a Table of Contents for each section it's hard even to see that that's what is going on.

The price of this book is pretty hefty, but that's only the start of the commitment you need to make in order to get the most out of owning it.

The Mesan Alignment is revealed, and, for Honor Harrington and the Manticoran Star Kingdom, this means war!

Unintended Consequences

Sometimes things don’t work out exactly as planned.

The Mesan Alignment has a plan—one it’s been working on for centuries. A plan to remake the galaxy and genetically improve the human race—its way.

Until recently, things have gone pretty much as scheduled, but then the Alignment hit a minor bump in the road called the Star Empire of Manticore. So the Alignment engineered a war between the Solarian League, the biggest and most formidable interstellar power in human history. To help push things along, the Alignment launched a devastating sneak attack which destroyed the Royal Manticoran Navy’s industrial infrastructure.

And in order to undercut Manticore’s galaxy-wide reputation as a star nation of its word, it launched Operation Janus—a false-flag covert operation to encourage rebellions it knows will fail by promising Manticoran support. The twin purposes are to harden Solarian determination to destroy the Star Empire once and for all, and to devastate the Star Empire’s reputation with the rest of the galaxy.

But even the best laid plans can have unintended consequences, and one of those consequences in this case may just be a new dawn of freedom for oppressed star nations everywhere.

Misbehaving: The Making of Behavioral Economics, by Richard Thaler

Get ready to change the way you think about economics.

Richard H. Thaler has spent his career studying the radical notion that the central agents in the economy are humans - predictable, error-prone individuals. Misbehaving is his arresting, frequently hilarious account of the struggle to bring an academic discipline back down to earth - and change the way we think about economics, ourselves, and our world.

Traditional economics assumes rational actors. Early in his research, Thaler realized these Spock-like automatons were nothing like real people. Whether buying a clock radio, selling basketball tickets, or applying for a mortgage, we all succumb to biases and make decisions that deviate from the standards of rationality assumed by economists. In other words we misbehave. More importantly, our misbehavior has serious consequences. Dismissed at first by economists as an amusing sideshow, the study of human miscalculations and their effects on markets now drives efforts to make better decisions in our lives, our businesses, and our governments.

Coupling recent discoveries in human psychology with a practical understanding of incentives and market behavior, Thaler enlightens listeners about how to make smarter decisions in an increasingly mystifying world. He reveals how behavioral economic analysis opens up new ways to look at everything from household finance to assigning faculty offices in a new building to TV game shows, the NFL draft, and businesses like Uber.

Laced with antic stories of Thaler's spirited battles with the bastions of traditional economic thinking, Misbehaving is a singular look into profound human foibles. When economics meets psychology, the implications for individuals, managers, and policy makers are both profound and entertaining.

Paradigm Shift - The Evolution of Behavioral Economics
By A Rationalist
"The foundation of political economy and, in general of every social science, is evidently psychology. A day may come when we shall be able to deduce the laws of social science from the principles of psychology." Vilfredo Pareto, 1906

Misbehaving is a thoroughly enjoyable read, both comprehensive and replete with historical context, but "neither a treatise nor a polemic" as prefaced by Thaler. Instead, it is a memoir and a chronological history on the rise of behavioral economics as a legitimate discipline, making it an excellent introduction to the field. The book is lengthy, an un-lazy 358 pages, but an easy read because of Thaler's self-deprecating style and numerous examples that are both funny and informative (like oenophile mental accounting). My favorite illustrative anecdote, however, was the kerfuffle that ensued among the "efficient market" professors at the University of Chicago when it came time to hold a lottery on allocating offices in their new academic building - hilarious.
I got hooked on behavioral economics almost 20 years ago at a conference held on the topic at Harvard's Kennedy School, featuring Richard Thaler, Richard Zeckhauser, Arnie Wood and others. The seeds planted from that fascinating seminar led me to be a lifelong student of this emerging, multi-disciplinary field and the importance of metacognition - quite literally, thinking about thinking. For an alcoholic, admitting you have a problem is the first step towards recovery. Analogously, it is impossible to temper evolutionarily prewired heuristics and biases unless you have studied them - and even then, it is too easy to 'fall off the wagon.' Anchoring, myopic loss aversion, overconfidence and hyperbolic discounting are all pervasive, but you have to understand the nature of these inherent biases to have any chance of counteracting them in your own behavior, both personally and professionally. As an institutional money manager overseeing billions of dollars in client assets, the lessons learned from behavioral finance have - unequivocally - been a key source of competitive advantage for me in an otherwise fairly efficient market.
From a personal standpoint, the useful lessons are also manifold and overlap with research on happiness and the value of rich experiences over accumulating more 'stuff.' Specifically, understanding the siren song of transaction utility (i.e. bargains) vs. acquisition utility (the 'consumer surplus') offers great insight on how to spend money. As Thaler notes: "For those who are at least living comfortably, negative transaction utility can prevent our consuming special experiences that will provide a lifetime of happy memories, and the amount by which the item was overpriced will long be forgotten. Good deals, on the other hand, can lure all of us into making purchases of objects of little value." Learn this lesson and you will be more likely to scalp an expensive ticket to the 'last' Rolling Stones tour than buy a fancy new jacket that is enticingly on sale, but will eventually gather dust in the back of your closet (Note: this also dovetails nicely with Buddhist philosophy around impermanence and craving - see "Hooked! Buddhist Writings on Greed, Desire, and the Urge to Consume" by Shambhala).
An excellent complementary read to Misbehaving, for those interested in the evolutionary drivers of behavioral biases, is "Kluge: The Haphazard Construction of the Human Mind" by Gary Marcus. Likewise, Nassim Taleb's brilliant "Fooled by Randomness: The Hidden Role of Chance in Life and in the Markets" is also a highly relevant read. Finally, for anyone with an interest in the applied behavioral field of 'choice architecture,' Thaler's earlier book with Cass Sunstein, "Nudge: Improving Decisions About Health, Wealth, and Happiness" is also thought-provoking. As a registered libertarian, I can honestly say that I have no problem with Thaler's view towards 'nudging' people to better outcomes through choice architecture, despite predictable criticisms of 'libertarian paternalism' as Orwellian (see Robert Williams' letter in WSJ - 5/23/15). Thaler clarifies the nudge objective as trying to "influence choices in a way that will make the choosers better off, as judged by themselves."
This is a very intimate book - reading Misbehaving, one is left with the wonderful feeling they've spent a long weekend with Thaler hearing about the history and rise of behavioral finance, over multiple bottles of wine, and all while being peppered with entertaining personal references and anecdotes.

Easily The Best Introduction of Behavioral Economics Available
By Hugh H. Schwartz
Richard Thaler's, Misbehaving: The Making of Behavioral Economics, is easily the best introduction to the subject available--for economists as well as for the general reader. Definitely so, despite a few omissions (noted below), largely because of the author's facility of explaining, in easy-to-grasp terms, the contribution that behavioral economics is making to problem solving (as well as to understanding recent economic decisions). This may be due, in part, to his personal involvement in so many phases of the development of the approach (such as in the successful effort to increase employee savings).

As for the omissions, perhaps the most significant relates to what Thaler considers the most important aim of behavioral economics, the gathering of evidence about actual human behavior. There is a relative inattention to field or natural exercises compared to laboratory economics--though the importance of the latter is acknowledged briefly towards the end of the book. A second, and more important shortcoming, is the failure to note the potential of asking decision makers to explain why they made certain decisions; this is being undertaken successfully by Truman Bewley, and is now being given more attention by several of the empirically oriented economists cited in the book. A third is that the "libertarian paternalistic" nudging which has led employees to increase their rate of saving, may not be the best that they could do, which is now being emphasized by others that Thaler also cites. Perhaps a second edition of The Making of Behavioral Economics will take note of these points.

These are minor problems, however. We have a major debt to Richard Thaler for all that he has contributed to the field and for his ability to explain everything in a manner that is really a pleasure to read.

A lot more autobiography than behavioral economics book
By Rafael Sánchez Cacho
Far less than what I was expecting. He talks too much about his life and too little about behavioral economy and its use.
It does have some really good ideas, but they are hidden on tons of boring anecdotes.

Reasonably good
By kalyson
I got this book partially because I prefer more of a textbook format than the Head First books. This book's format was more straightforward, so I got it along with the Head First Servlets and JSP. However, I have found a lot of errors, inconsistencies and confusing explanations in this book. Some of the errors are minor, but others really cause fundamental confusion. I'm searching for an errata for the book now. (There may not be one -- I'm not finding it yet.)

Although the Head First books have a comic, cartoonish quality that I don't generally care for, I must say that their editing is better, their explanations are always understandable, and I find myself going to that book to clear up my confusion with this one.

That being said, there is a lot of very good information in this book and some of the explanations and examples are pretty good. You might consider getting both books because they both cover the material in different ways.

I was tempted to give the book four stars, but I've just hit another few errors that are really irritating. (The author is trying to explain the difference between the forward() and include() functions for handling servlet requests. But his code examples mistakenly are showing forward() where apparently he meant to type include(). These examples do not match the explanation at all. See pages 183 and 184.)

Another egregious error: In the Head First Servlets & JSP book, they make a point of saying "You need to recognize WRONG method names like: getPrintWriter(), getResponseStream(), [...]" etc. And there's a big X in a circle on top of these names. Look at the SCWCD book by D. Bridgewater on page 179. Guess what method he uses inside the code example -- getPrintWriter() !!! (Gee, and I was wondering why my code would not compile.) In that SAME code sample, you can see him getting a PrintWriter object and calling the "write" method on it. I was perplexed by this because I saw them using the "println" method in the same situation in the Head First book. Well, apparently there is a difference, even though the code does work. Sierra and Bates in Head First make a point of saying you should use "println" with a PrintWriter and a "write" with a ServletOutputStream. They explain why, of course. I don't know about you, but these sorts of errors are confusing. I'm not even mentioning the multitudes of small typos throughout the book, like: java.servlet.forward.path_info. (servlet is in the javax package, not java.)

In any case, the book might be worth getting, and if you are able to find an errata it would make the book much more usable. If you do not find an errata that covers all of these errors (I've only mentioned a few), then be sure to get some other resource to check this one against so you can understand parts that are erroneous or confusing.

Messy , but practical
By Riccardo Audano
This book material is actually decent, accurate and complete, but exposed in a very disorganized and confusing way, with a writing style that will put you to sleep in seconds. It also contains some typos, a defect particularly unforgivable in a certification book. For style , organization and overall coolness 'Head First SCWCD' is way ahead of this book, but it does have a drawback: no code examples. Certification book or not, lack of code examples is a mortal sin (of laziness) by the authors. This book does have a few code example (structured as exercises) for the most important sections in each chapter, and a final 'lab' (simple exercise) at the end of each chapter. I like that, but I also have to say that the code examples are sometimes unnecessarily convoluted, and badly structured. Each small example is a single web application. Trust me, you will soon get tired of having to decompress and mess with every single damn war of these examples. How about a single web application organized as an Eclipse project with a ant build file to build it and deploy it instead? So, if you already have enough practice in coding java webapps, and just want to brush up the dusty corners and get used to the nasty, useless, tricky questions that plague certification exams, 'Head First SCWCD' should be your favorite choice.
But if you like to do a little practice and see the concept you're studying in action, this book would be more appropriate. This book can also be used to actually learn Servlet & JSP, not just to pass the exam.
Finally, a big plus is having the entire pdf version of the book on the accompanying CD, which also contains a free exam simulator. (All things you don't get with the O'Reilly book).

A lot of errors
By L.
I would not recommend this book even though it covers all of exam objectives and has a lot of examples and exercises. The reason is that there are a lot of errors that make this book hard to read. It is very irritating, annoying and time consuming.
Here are just some of errors I found in the book.
1. Answer to question 13 on page 88: "...HttpServletRequest.getHeaders() returns all request header names..." It is not correct because the method that returns all request header names is getHeaderNames(). There is no getHeaders() method (with no arguments) in HttpServletRequest class.
2. Page 82 question 19. Author mistakenly took the code from question 8 so the question 19 and answer to it on page 90 are completely irrelevant.
3. On page 559 author says that the type for 'items' attribute is java.lang.Array. There is no such class in Java!
4. Page 637 answer to question 8: "...J to 14 (c:forEach, again)". If you look at question's code on page 625 you can see that correct answer should be: J maps to 'body'.

Number of errors, big and small, is very high in this book. This is the case of unprofessional work both on the part of author & editor.

From Publishers Weekly
Founding member and former president of the Midwives Alliance of North America and author of Spiritual Midwivery, Gaskin offers encouragement and practical advice in her upbeat and informative book on natural childbirth. Since the mid-1970s, Gaskin and the midwives in her practice on a Summertown, Tenn., commune known as "The Farm," have attended over 2,200 natural births. Gaskin, who learned the rudiments of her gentle birthing technique from the Mayans in Guatemala, has helped bring attention to the method's remarkably low rate of morbidity and medical intervention. Couples considering natural childbirth will get inspirational coaxing from more than a dozen first-person narratives shared by the author's clients. Gaskin decries what she sees as Western medicine's focus on pain during birth, arguing that natural birthing can not only be euphoric and blissful but also orgasmic (a survey of 150 natural birthing women "found thirty-two who reported experiencing at least one orgasmic birth"). The second half of Gaskin's book deals with the practical side of natural birthing, including how to avoid standard medical interventions such as epidurals, episiotomies and even prenatal amniocentesis that may be unnecessary, even dangerous, to mother or child. While this may not be the definitive guide to natural childbirth, it is a comfortable and supportive read for women who want to trust their bodies to do what comes naturally.

From Booklist
Using history as her guide, nationally recognized midwife Gaskin explores what she hopes will be a renaissance in natural childbirth, something that she's been advocating since the mid-1970s. By focusing on how women of ancient civilizations and other modern peoples give birth, Gaskin puts our own hypersensitivities in perspective, uncovering a beautiful, sometimes orgasmic experience rather than a dreadful, painful one. Sure, pain is part of childbirth, but preparing for the pain in a realistic rather than sentimental way--whether giving birth at home or in a hospital--can be the key to a woman's ability to deal with it naturally. Within the pages of personal anecdotes, some touching, some startling, from Gaskin's patients and colleagues, every woman is sure to find something to relate to, whether or not she chooses to have a medicine-free labor. The helpful back matter features a glossary, a detailed resource list including advocacy groups and Web sites, and a bibliography that includes periodicals, rounding out an extremely comprehensive and up-to-date guide on the topic. I felt deceived...
By Lunarshan
I relied heavily on reviews to decide which childbirth preparation route to go, so I think its only fair that I share my experience. To be clear, I mainly used this book and the hypnobabies home study program to prepare for giving birth. I was also really inspired by "The Business of Being Born".

Along with all the hours spent reading and re-reading this book, and completing the hypnobabies program with my supportive and engaged husband, I did numerous other things to prepare such as prenatal yoga, choosing the best and most experienced midwife I could find, creating the optimal birth environment etc. I trusted the message of the book and program so much that I opted for a home water birth.

In retrospect, I guess I felt sort of invincible. I thought I was set for a totally empowering, but challenging (of course) birth experience. I sort of imagined I would be like this earth mother goddess, trusting my instincts and allowing my body to do exactly what it was designed to do. After all, how could it go wrong? I was very healthy, have practiced yoga for over 10 years, have a high pain tolerance, was super prepared etc...

Well, the way my birth unfolded was sort of like some massive cosmic joke. After all of my hormone fueled rants against the over-medicalization of birth and my clarity about the right way and environment to give birth in, I gave birth to my son flat on my back, under the harsh glare of fluorescent lights, in a hospital, with the assistance of forceps, surrounded by strangers and completely numb from the waist down. I suppose when I step back from all of the grief, agony and trauma involved, it's really sort of funny in a way.

The most amazing thing about the way I ended up giving birth is that I didn't care, when it came right down it, I really didn't care about any of that. I was so deeply relieved that my son was ok, that I was ok, and that it was over, finally over... After 39 hours of unimaginably painful back labor, with a baby whose head size was in the 90th something percentile, which was cocked at an angle despite my midwife's best efforts at manually repositioning him, after two hours of intense and unproductive pushing at home, and going on no sleep at all, what does and doesn't really matter becomes so much more clear.

In the end, I felt duped by the message of this book. If you read between the lines of all the useful information about labor and delivery in this book, there's a clear message that women's bodies are flawlessly designed to birth babies, and except for rare instances it only ever goes wrong because doctors get involved and start mucking things up with interventions. If women are provided the right kind of support, guidance, and environment, they will trust their bodies enough to birth their babies in a relatively peaceful and uncomplicated way.

The problem with the message of this book is that it isn't exactly true. To be clear, I think this message can be very helpful in preparing women whose births are uncomplicated and it probably sets them up for a better birth experience. For the women who aren't so lucky, and yes I do think luck has a lot to do with it, the message can really do a disservice. Not only was I not prepared for the way my birth actually happened, but I felt completely confused and deceived. It has taken me months and months to process how so much of what I had held true about birth was wrong.

Not only was I ill prepared for the way my birth happened, but I was also ill prepared for the aftermath. I completely believed that giving birth vaginally was the absolute best and safest way to go. Well again, not so much in my case. I've spent the last six months in physical therapy trying to undo the damage done to my pelvic floor by all the prolonged pushing and use of forceps. I hope to avoid surgery, but I've since come to learn that depending on the study, eleven to nineteen percent of women will undergo pelvic floor surgery at some point in their life. Two of the major risk factors are prolonged second stage of labor and the use of forceps. Just another possible pitfall I had no awareness of before giving birth.

I don't mean to sound bitter, and have no intention of invalidating all of the lovely birth stories that women share. I think it's awesome that such an important life event goes so well for so many women. I think women should do whatever they can to increase their odds of having a positive birth experience. At the same time, I think it's important to realize that birth is an act of nature, and just as in nature, things can become very chaotic and even destructive. I feel as if I have been humbled by mother nature. I really get that we don't have complete control over this experience of giving birth. People have known this for ages.

Honestly, if I regret anything, I regret putting myself in a situation where medical care and pain relief was not available when I so desperately needed it. The thing about giving birth is that you don't really know what you're going to need until you do. If I give birth again, it will be in the most mom and baby friendly hospital I can find, with the most enlightened and skilled doctor or midwife I can find, and with an awesome doula. I will prepare for a natural birth, but I will be open and I will be humble about it. I will trust my limits and my instincts. If I do need pain relief, I'm going to completely own that, and will feel very lucky to have the option for it when so many women in the past didn't, and so many women in other parts of the world don't.

I have come to believe that most concerns about pain relief in labor are completely overblown by the natural childbirth community. Apparently, now there is such a thing as a walking epidural that allows for mobility and some sensation. If given far enough into labor, it is much less likely to result in a c-section. This type of low dose epidural is also much less likely to result in a baby that is born drugged. Also, there are countless women who are able to successfully breastfeed after getting an epidural, which I know is a concern for many women.

One last thing I want to share about The Farm where Ina May delivers, is that their safety statistics are actually pretty misleading. I say this because I was so impressed by The Farm's low rates of interventions and amazing safety statistics that I falsely believed that my home birth could be just as safe as a hospital birth. I've since come to learn that safety statistics for The Farm only take into account births that happen there and don't include the outcomes of women they transfer to the hospital mid-labor. Apparently, of those women who end up being transferred to the hospital, there is a much higher likelihood of maternal or fetal death than if they had been in the hospital all along. I think this is really important to know when considering a home birth because depending on the source, 15-25% of home births will end up in the hospital.

All of that being said, I'm giving the book two stars for having a lot of useful and well presented information, and as for the three stars I subtracted, well you've probably already gathered my reasons for that.

So, whatever approach to childbirth preparation you choose and however your birth experience ends up unfolding, I hope most of all that you end up feeling empowered, supported, safe and without regret.

Proceed with Caution
By Kelsey
Ok... So I just found out I was pregnant a few weeks ago and I've been really interested in finding 'natural' childbirth methods to avoid an epidural. My friend recommended this book to me and it's... a little weird. This is my first pregnancy and I was NOT prepared for what I was about to read.
The first half of the book is really hippy-like birthing stories about women from the 1970s and before... so I'm thinking 'It's 2016, my baby will be born in 2017... why am I reading stories from like a hundered years ago?'. So I skipped over most of the first half and got to the first chapter, which is sort of an introduction, sort of a list of terrible things that happen during labor. The first few pages I read I was smiling and getting excited about potentially getting though our first birth without an epidural... by the time I got to the last couple pages in the chapter I was crying and yelling to my husband that my ribs here going to break when I had the baby. So... I haven't actually picked up the book again since then, and that was about a week ago. I want to finish the rest of the book, and I want to be prepared for the birth when it happens... I think I was just really taken aback by the graphic photos and descriptions contained in the very beginning of the book.
I'll update my review when I have finished the book! But it might be a while...

Not as useful as I would have hoped given high ratings
By Quetzal
Not quite what I expected. This book had a LOT of fear-mongering about modern medicine. Railing on ultrasounds of all things, shaming doctors for daring to prescribe calcium and magnesium sulfate (which are dietary supplements by the way) for pre-eclampsia over their suggestion of sticking to a vegetarian diet (which has only been substantiated by their anecdotal evidence), etc. It made me doubt the rest of the content of the book.

I'm already convinced to try to have a natural birth, but if worst comes to worst I feel like if I end up having to get medical help that it'll be the end of the world according to this book.

It was lacking in practical advice and a clear picture of what the birthing process was like, which is what I was mainly looking for. It felt like a sales pitch for birthing at "the farm."

"What is Shadowline? It is the place where things meet: light and shadows, hope and despair, good and evil. It is, to me, the most interesting place to hunt for stories." So begins this stunningly realized and beautifully rendered new work from master storyteller and artist Iain McCaig. McCaig is best known for his work as a principal designer on the three Star Wars prequels, including the iconic characters Queen Amidala and Darth Maul, as well as his work on many major motion pictures, television, and video games. His work can be seen in such acclaimed films as Terminator 2, Hook, Francis Ford Coppola's Dracula, Interview with a Vampire, and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Shadowline presents a stunning portfolio of more than two decades of McCaig's masterful concept designs and storyboards, cover art and illustrations, as well as his private sketchbooks and personal paintings, all woven together within the confines of an engrossing, otherworldly tale.

Iain McCaig is amazing, and this book does a good job showing you his genius in action
By Amazon Customer
This man is a genius, a true rare gem of an illustrative storyteller.

It's not a teaching you how to draw book, nor is it just a portfolio showcase of his life's work, its... something else. It's more raw and rare, and you get to peek into his world, you get to plug into his imagination and see things the way he creates.

There are a lot pencil sketches, prisma marker roughs and some rough digital art pieces.

Here are the things that made me rate it at 4 stars instead of 5 stars:

- I don't like the overall graphic design of the book, it's lacking a solid visual coherence and continuity.
- The art work is mostly rough concept sketches, not many final pieces...
- ...and it does not include many of his earlier works such as the Final Fantasy game book ones, those amazing pen and ink illustrations I absolutely adore.

Otherwise, Iain McCaig's Shadowline is fantastic book that really let's you into his mysterious and fantastic inner creative worlds.

awesome artwork, interesting presentation
By phil
i love the artwork in this book. McCaig is one of my biggest inspirations and his stuff is beautifully laid out in this volume with quantity.
I say the book is interesting because McCaig didn't just write a straight biography and procedure here. True to his storytelling roots, he created a world to explain his ways and ideas and then presented it through the report of a fictional character that he created to interview himself...He also has a very awkward photo of himself in the front. It's all rather strange, but it was so interesting and original that I had to buy a copy for myself to read his whole "story."
the book also comes with fun little "lessons" in the back with exercises to practice drawing, neatly tucked in envelopes. It makes the package quite interactive.

the page stock is great quality and so is the print, but my biggest gripe is the binding doesn't feel like it will hold and i'm too afraid to open the pages all the way. which is a shame because sometimes you just want to lay the book open to enjoy the larger images.

Supassing all expectations
By Richard A. Tucker
My reaction to moving through this book was a little unexpected.
Usually when I go through a good art book the artist that I am is a little discouraged, my own progress being lacking when compared to my mentors and some of my peers. However, my reaction to this book was a bout of chills and an exhuberant desire to draw like mad. One might conclude that I was underwhelmed, disappointed- a sense that I'm "much better than this loser". Instead, I was impressed in ways that have a hard time meeting any valued description.
Iain McCaig does not make it look simple.
He makes it look deep, fascinating and utterly approachable. He's an example of what being excited about one's work should look like.
I have to recommend this book to artists, particularly those struggling to find a reason to put pencil to good paper (any paper to take a mark is good paper). This is not your run-of-the-mill "art book". It's a celebration of the act of creation in which every mark the artist makes is potentially a portal to a world you want to visit, whether for good or for ill. The creature images run from whimsical in nature to terrible if ever met. The people are heroic, horrific and all points in between. Examples of sketches run throughout the book but they are eleborate, evocative hints when they are run up against full blown painted productions of characters and the worlds where they live.
I see a little Claire Wendling here and the recent work of Mathieu Lauffray there and this is all good. It's not that McCaig is copying anyone or vice versa. It's that they (and others not named) have such an obvious, shared passion for their work that it is an inspiration to both stragglers and jaded professionals in the field (or, at least it should have that effect).

I can only hope there will some day be another book.

My last comment is to see this man's production work for the upcoming film adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs' "A Princess of Mars", leaves me anxious. Can, or will the film look this good? And his depiction of the actor to (possibly?) play John Carter is more than a little inspiring.
