About the Author
Atif M. Memon is an Associate Professor at the Department of Computer Science, University of Maryland, where he founded and heads the Event Driven Software Lab (EDSL). Researchers at the EDSL study issues of design, development, quality assurance, and maintenance of such software applications. He designed and developed the model-based GUI testing software GUITAR, which operates on Android, iPhone, Java Swing, .NET, Java SWT, UNO, MS Windows, and web systems, and leverages a resource cloud for test automation. He has published over 90 research articles on the topic of event driven systems, software testing, and software engineering. He is the founder of the International Workshop on TESTing Techniques & Experimentation Benchmarks for Event-Driven Software (TESTBEDS). He also helped develop the workshop on Experimental Evaluation of Software and Systems in Computer Science (EVALUATE).

He is the Serial Editor of Advances in Computers, published by Elsevier. This series, since its first volume in 1960 and now the oldest series still being published, covers new developments in computer technology. He is an elected member of the Steering Committee of the International Conference on Software Testing, Verification and Validation ICST, the largest conference on software testing. He serves on various editorial boards, including that of the Journal of Software Testing, Verification, and Reliability. He has served on numerous National Science Foundation panels and program committees, including ICSE, FSE, ICST, WWW, ASE, ICSM, and WCRE. He is currently serving on a National Academy of Sciences panel as an expert in the area of Computer Science and Information Technology, for the Pakistan-U.S. Science and Technology Cooperative Program, sponsored by United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

He has a joint appointment in the University's Institute for Advanced Computer Studies (UMIACS). He received his Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh in Computer Science in 2001, and started at the University of Maryland soon thereafter. In 2007 he was a visiting scholar at the Institute of Software at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and a visiting researcher at Tata Research Development and Design Centre.

Hannah advances a constructivist account of the role of NGOs in the EU’s trade policymaking process. She argues that NGOs have been instrumental in providing education, raising awareness, and giving a voice to broader societal concerns about proposed trade deals, both when they take advantage of formal participatory opportunities and when they protest from the streets and in the media. However, the book also highlights how NGO inputs are mediated by the social structure of global trade governance. Epistemes―the background knowledge, ideological and normative beliefs, and shared assumptions about how the world works―determine who has a voice in global trade governance.

Showing how NGOs succeed only when their advocacy conforms broadly to the dominant episteme, this book will be of value to scholars and students with an interest in NGOs and international trade negotiations. It will also be of interest to policymakers, national trade negotiators, government departments, and the trade policy community.

About the Author

Erin Hannah is Associate Professor of Political Science at King’s University College at the University of Western Ontario, Canada. She is an international political economist specializing in global governance, trade, sustainable development, poverty and inequality, global civil society, and European Union trade politics. She has published articles in Journal of International Economic Law, Journal of Civil Society, Journal of World Trade, Politics, and Third World Quarterly. She is co-editor (with James Scott and Silke Trommer) of the book Expert Knowledge in Global Trade (Abingdon, Routledge, 2015).

Life changing

This book is an easy read and yet it takes the reader to a new understanding of what causes conflict in business. The concepts here if learned will make a person more able to focus on results than ever before and will allow an organization to produce more than anyone ever imagined. We need to understand that conflict between two people is always a result of two people who think they are right and the other is wrong. True resolution only comes when at least one person is willing to question their own virtue. Another key is when I justify my position I know I have a problem and I need to do something about my problem. I recommend that a person read and reread this book several times to grasp fully the concepts in the book.

About the Author

David Hanscom, MD is an orthopedic spine surgeon who has been performing complex spine surgery since 1986. Much of his practice has been helping patients out of a deep hole caused by multiple failed spine surgeries. He spent the first eight years of his practice focusing on surgical solutions and noticed that surgery alone was rarely successful in accomplishing its goal. He successfully resolved his own chronic pain in 2003 after suffering for 15 years. He began to share his experience with his patients, and by helping his patients address all aspects of chronic pain, including physical conditioning and the central nervous system, he has witnessed many patients become pain free.

Written by a most experienced and knowledgable orthopedic spine surgeon, this book provides a non-surgical approach for the treatment of chronic back pain, for both surgical and non-surgical patients.
Surgical intervention for chronic back pain has been fraught with poor postoperative results.
Dr. Hanscom himself bears testimony to the struggle of unresolved chronic pain which ultimately became the foundation and catalyst for his research and the development of his Back in Control program.
He possesses a wide experience with surgical patients whose back pain and associated quality of life had not substantially improved following surgical intervention.
Dr. Hanscom has approached the multi-faceted ubiquitous ailment of chronic pain from scientific research of neurophysiological pain pathways.
His non-surgical program for chronic pain treatment has been proven efficacious.
DOC, direct your own care, is outlined in 4 sequential stages which requires self indulgence and perservence.
As a health care provider I have worked with Dr. Hanscom and his patients and have witnessed first hand the successful resolution of their heretofore chronic pain using the program, Back in Control.

Dr. Hanscom focuses our lens onto other, less well known, etiologies of pain. Drawing from a huge experience and wisdom, the author provides the reader with new ways to view and subsequently treat pain. As outlined in the text, the traditional concepts of pain are often not sufficient to best treat patients who are suffering and moreover, the treatments themselves often do more harm than good. However, the current medical climate (emphasized in chapter 15) has evolved to not have a proclivity to look for better ways of understanding and treating many pain syndromes. As a neuroscientist, chapter 3 was most interesting to me and focuses on imbedding pain pathways. In the end, anyone (both lay or medical professional) in chronic pain or who knows someone with this issue, will find a wealth of knowledge in this approximately 300 page easy to read book and will probably find many answers and treatment strategies.

An amazingly helpful book!

An amazingly helpful book! Dr. Hanscom shows that he really understands what chronic pain sufferers are going through, by sharing his own experience and those of the patients he has helped. The genius of his approach is that it is so straightforward - anyone who wants to escape chronic pain and makes the commitment can use his techniques and suggestions. I found that this book is one of those rare gems - truly life changing on many levels.

the previous book does not need to be read first in order to enjoy Fox Children

With The Witcher: Volume 2 we have a contained and complete story separate from volume 1; the previous book does not need to be read first in order to enjoy Fox Children. Gamers looking to expand the world beyond The Wild Hunt and Assassins of Kings will find familiar territory and enjoy the story. Those new to the world of the Witcher can also begin with Fox Children since it is a standalone and can serve as a decent introduction to the character. Both the game designer and writer Tobin collaborated and note that the game has many elements drawn from comic/graphic novel conventions and therefore this is a very accessible piece appealing to a wide audience.

Story: The Witcher joins with a dwarf Adaggio to protect a ship's crew attempting to rescue a wealthy Elf's kidnapped daughter. But the task is not so easily accomplished and it will take all of the Witcher's talents and skills in order to survive the illusions and traps set by a vengeful vulpess.

The story is very straightforward but definitely captures the dialogue and personalities from the games (more so than the novels, in which the speech patterns (and often humor) are less defined). Although the author does attempt to bring in some moral complexities, the simplistic nature of the story does result in a pat solution/ending. Perhaps that was the most disappointing aspect of Fox Children since so many of the quests/plots in Witcher involve ambivalence and nuance. There's a lot of padding in the middle that devolved to 'fight monster x then fight monster y' that perhaps pandered a bit too much to the gamers without bringing more to the storyline.

The art is serviceable and the characters look the part. There were some really ugly drawings in there, however, where faces were distorted or simply colored in without any features. The Witcher, especially, ended up being very nebulously defined, often viewed either extreme close up (e.g., cat-like eyeballs) or long shot pullbacks where he's pretty much a lump with a white ponytail. Especially those who recently played the game and have the incredible animation still in their memory might be a bit disappointed as I was by the illustration work on the Witcher himself. That said, the rest of the art was solid and told the story well.

While this is a newbie-friendly self contained story, I did find it a bit bloated and lacking the complexity of a Witcher game subplot. Certainly, the author captured the curt, 'dropped article' dialogue and grounded logic/wisdom of Geralt. As well, the misogynistic "women are insane and especially the ones I'm involved with" is intact here. The author and illustrator know the Witch lore, characters, novels, and games well and have done a decent job of staying true to their source material. And yet, the story does exactly what the Witcher games did not: it gives a fairly straightforward, 'kill the monsters' quest with a happy ending. That's a shame since the Witcher games and novels are about not having pat answers to life's difficulties thrown at Geralt - whose victories are Pyrrhic more often than not.

In all, I am glad I bought it. The physical, soft cover book is beautifully presented and includes artwork from the game as well as covers from the comics. The printing is crisp and the colors rich. But yes, I did hope for more.

The book is a very good comic. If you enjoyed the "House of Glass" previous Witcher Comic, you will like this one. I would recommend.
