Bemused

I do not know why Gaillard wrote this book, and I do not know why I read it (with pleasure). I guess the author wanted to stress the difficulties of breaking into an all-male enclave. I guess I wanted to learn something about the emergence of the Standard Model. I liked the book, although I may be biased by the fact that I am an academic, and the book is an odyssey of academic schmoozing.
I certainly did not have to be told about the male domination of academia forty years ago. In all my years as an undergrad at the University of Pennsylvania and the Sorbonne, and my graduate training in economics at Harvard, I never had a female instructor. The only books I read by women were in economic history and development economics. When I was a first-year Assistant Professor at Harvard, I received a letter inviting my wife to join the Harvard Wives Club. Needless to say, there was no Harvard Husbands club.
Gaillard (which means "hardy" in French) spends lots of time on her personal life, which is okay with me. She also talks a lot about faculty politics and how she was mistreated. Okay. But I don't know an academic who couldn't relate with relish stories of being mistreated. Really boring. Who cares?
I recommend this book because it found it fun reading, I did learn some history of science, and Gaillard is a pleasant writer with a sunny disposition.

A Dose of Modern Physics and Perserverence

Some modern atomic physics knowledge is helpful. I found the history of standard model physics presented at about the right physics level for me, a former high physics and chemistry teacher. The thread of chauvinism Gaillard presents throughout the book is enlightening, but also disturbing.

Pippa is not reinventing the wheel for entertaining

As the sister of Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, Pippa Middleton is in an unenviable situation. In many ways, she cannot win and it is unfortunate that to some, she will always be known as the only maid of honor to ever wear a flattering dress. Never judged on her own efforts, but on the media and public perception of her. Celebrate: A Year of Festivities for Families and Friends, is her attempt to change that.

Given her low profile prior to the royal wedding, Celebrate could be viewed as a premature effort. However, she's not the first person to jump on the bandwagon of her own notoriety nor will she be the last. To Pippa's credit, she acknowledges this in the introduction to Celebrate. She has the opportunity and she's taking advantage of it. By admitting this she makes it redundant for those who scoff at her efforts. Now who is being unoriginal?

Several reviews for this book have criticized Pippa for stating the obvious: 'ice goes great with drinks', 'a turkey at Christmas time is good for large gatherings'. Yes, it's true but let's be honest, even Martha Stewart falls back on 'Pumpkins add to the festive atmosphere of Halloween', 'Hearts make perfect Valentines' and 'Easter egg hunts are fun'. What Pippa does add to the field is her youth. Like her sister, she makes going the extra mile fashionable. Thus giving twenty-somethings options other than beer, wine, tortilla chips and brie cheese trays for their own parties.

Divided by seasons, Pippa presents crafts, recipes, nostalgic/traditional games and charming tidbits of trivia appropriate to the occasion. She also offers small glimpses into how her family celebrated events like Easter and Mothers Day. While her tips for building bonfires may not apply to most of her readers, some of the game instructions are hard to follow (Conker fights?) and hanging donuts from trees may be an attempt for the brave, her instructions for creating Christmas decorations and place settings using simple items can be for those willing to make the effort. Very reassuring for craft-challenged people like me.

With Celebrate, Pippa Middleton is not reinventing the wheel for entertaining. Instead her book is a fine attempt at reinterpreting it.

A failure in editing

Pippa Middleton took a lot of flack for her book, but as an editor myself, I believe that the flaw is on the editorial side. The basic set-up of the book (by seasons and traditional British events) is useful. I enjoyed the Burns Night section, plus other tidbits like how to make a "Christmas cracker."

Unfortunately, the book is bloated, with equal weight given to the mundane and the interesting. I understand that Pippa wanted to publish an accessible book, but it's almost never a good idea to talk down to the reader. Martha Stewart gets away with it because she's Martha Stewart; i.e., she has good reason to assume her readers can't live up to her example. In Pippa's case, I don't get it. Bobbing for apples, capture the flag, turkey for Christmas?

If I were editing the book, I'd suggest the following organization within sections:

* First, a simple list of the traditional British ways of doing things, without the play by play of every familiar game, decoration, or menu item. We can cut out paper hearts for Valentines and apply glitter without instructions, thanks.

* Full instructions for original/unusual ideas only. These are good as is but get lost among pages of "tie balloons to chairs and hang streamers."

* A feature on events that Pippa actually made special. In her Guardian article, she mentioned throwing a white-clothing-only party, a Scandinavian-themed party, and others. Why aren't those in the book? We want to read about how she *actually* parties, not how she wants the little people, I mean readers, to party.

* A smattering of only the most special and personal recipes. This is the Internet age after all. Does Nigella Lawson or Ina Garten already supply a recipe for it? Free? Online? Then we don't need to read yours unless it's something amazing.

* Finally, suggestions for how to develop new traditions. For people who aren't interested in a Burns Night, why not suggest choosing a beloved writer from your own culture and planning some complementary dishes to serve alongside a fireside reading? What else can go in a Christmas cracker? What other traditional dances should we try to revive?

Overall, I enjoyed parts of this book, but I finished feeling a bit duped. Maybe Pippa truly spends her life as a character in a 19th century novel, complete with reel dancing, lawn games, and bicycling to picnic locales, never a cell phone or computer in sight. I'm suspicious there's a lot more yachting, skiing, Prada shopping, and hobnobbing, though. Too bad. The truth would have made for a better book.

A comprehensive guide for home parties

Ms. Middleton's book does an excellent job of providing accessible recipes and easy to make crafts for any reader who is planning a home party.

This purpose of this book is to help a host plan a fun and thoughtful event for a small group of close friends. This book is not a blueprint for multi million dollar events, and it is clearly presented to be no such book. It is, however, my new go-to reference for any seasonal gathering I host.

One major benefit of this book is that is considers both children's and adult's activities ideas. Since most families consist of members ranging in age, it is very appropriate for family party planning.

Everything from the photography to the paper choice has been carefully curated in this book. Excellent book, I can't wait for a follow-up from Ms. Middleton.

Finally! Another VERY helful and applicable management book!

By dedicating 90% of his book to a so-called leadership fable, Patrick Lencioni very effectively conveys the very essence of the model he proposes in order to deal with dysfunctional teams. Though the story he presents is that of a hypothetical newly appointed CEO of a distressed start-up and (in the beginning of the story) her highly dysfunctional executive team, the model is perfectly applicable to any team throughout most organizations.
The model consists of a pyramid with the five dysfunctions of a team (from the bottom, up):
1) Absence of trust: stemming from an unwillingness in the team members to be vulnerable and genuinely open up with one another about their mistakes and weaknesses.
2) Fear of conflict: inability to engage in unfiltered, passionate (yet constructive, though it may strike you as odd) debate.
3) Lack of commitment: no buy in and commitment can be expected when ideas and opinions have not been aired and genuinely taken into consideration prior to a decision.
4) Avoidance of accountability: without commitment to a clearly defined set of goals, team members will hesitate to call their colleagues on their actions and behaviors that are counterproductive for the team.
5) Inattention to results: Lencioni brings it all home through the realization that avoidance of accountability leads to a state where team members tend to put their individual needs above the team's collective goals.
Throughout the last leg of his book, Lencioni contrasts how dysfunctional teams behave by comparing them to a cohesive team in the case of each of the five dysfunctions. He also provides suggestions on overcoming each of the dysfunctions and insights into the role of the leader in this process, all in a very structured and to-the-point way. Complementing this, he provides a Team Assessment tool to help determine where your team is at in terms of each of the five elements of the model.
As much as the book can be digested without too much trouble in 2-3 straight hours, it is inevitable (unless you are fooling yourself or you operate in a very healthy team) to have your managerial wheels in your mind turning at full speed by the time you are done with it. As a manager and an avid reader, I welcomed this book with open arms because I found it to be very useful and readily applicable. Now comes my challenge in putting it to use.

This book is helpful to anyone who serves on a team and specifically helpful for team leaders. You will see yourself and your team in this book. More than that, you will find specific steps you can take to make your team better. Through a real life fable, Pat leads you through the steps you need to take to move a team from dysfunction to health. You will find a clear model as well as examples that are as relevant as your last meeting.
As I read this book I discovered:
1. A vocabulary I can use with my team to discuss dysfunction.
2. A self-analysis that will get the discussion started.
3. A clear model for implementation.
As a team leader, this book challenged me to:
1) Lead selflessly
2) Take risks
3) Encourage conflict
4) Embrace the power of meetings
4) Direct my team around a common theme
This book is simple, practical and filled with wisdom. Highly recommended.

Good framework for ensuring you have a healthy work environment

I found this book to be Patrick's best - An easy read with a great structure for keeping your team healthy. Strongly recommended if your team has more then its fair share of politics. If you have this, start at the first dysfunction and work your way up!

Summary - A start up has just hired a new CEO, an older woman with operational experience in bricks-and-mortar companies where she had to deal with a dysfunctional team, including one especially venomous worker.

The framework of the 5 Dysfunctions:

* The first dysfunction is an Absence of Trust. This happens when team members are not open with one another about their mistakes and weaknesses.
* This sets the tone for the second dysfunction - The Fear of Conflict. Teams that lack trust are unable to engage in unfiltered and passionate debate of ideas. Instead they resort to veiled discussions and guarded comments.
* The lack of healthy conflict is a problem because leads to the third dysfunction - Lack of Commitment. Without having aired their opinions in the course of passionate and open debate, team members, rarely, if ever buy in and commit to decisions, though they may feign agreement during meetings.
* Because of this lack of commitment, team members develop the fourth dysfunction - Avoidance of Accountability. Without committing to a clear plan of action, even the most focused and driven people often hesitate to call their peers on actions and behaviors that seem counterproductive to the good of the team.
* Failure to hold one another accountable create an environment that leads to the fifth dysfunction - Inattention to Results, which can thrive where individuals put their needs (ego, career development, or recognition) above that of the team.

* Trust lies at the heart of a functioning, cohesive team. Without it, teamwork is impossible.
* Trust is the confidence among team members that their peers intentions are good, and that there is no reason to be protective or careful around the group.
* Teams that lack trust spend inordinate amounts of time and energy managing their behavior and interactions within the group.
* Members of teams with an absence of trust: Conceal their weaknesses and mistakes from one another, Hesitate to ask for help or provide constructive feedback, Hesitate to offer help outside their own areas of responsibility, Jump to conclusions about the intentions and aptitudes of others, without trying to clarify them, Fail to recognize and tap into one another's skills and experiences, Waste time and energy managing their behaviors for effect, Hold grudges, and Dread meetings and spend time to avoid spending time together
* Vulnerability based trust cannot happen overnight. It requires shared experiences over time, multiple instances of follow-through and credibility, and an in-depth understanding of the unique attributes of team members.
* Leader must risk losing face and being vulnerable in front of the team so that the team can do likewise.
* It's ironic that so many people avoid conflict in the name of efficiency when healthy conflict saves so much time compared to back-channel attacks and maneuvering.
* Teams that fear conflict: Have boring meetings, Create environments where back-channel politics thrive, Ignore controversial topics that are critical to the team success, and Fail to tap into all the opinions and perspectives of team members
* Monuments of truth are best handled by face-to-face, not email.
* Big issue "a fractured team is like a fractured bone; fixing it is always painful and sometimes you have to re-break it to heal it fully. And the re-break always hurts more because it is intentional"
* "it is very possible that some of us here won't find the new company to be the kind of place where we want to be"
* 2 rules of a meeting: be present and participate.
* Questions to know people better: Hometown. Number of kids. Childhood hobbies. Biggest challenge in growing up, first job, etc.
* Politics is when people choose their words and actions based on how they want others to react rather than based on what they really think.
* No trust = No Open Conversation = Artificial Harmony.
* If people don't unload, they won't get on board.
* Listen, Assess, then DO!
* Disagree and Commit!
* Every great movie (meeting) has conflict.
* You will fight - about issues. But that is your job.

The applications, which are an intergral part of each chapter makes this a must for students and established researchers who want to gain a full understanding of the current state of the futures and options industry.

A Student's Perspective

The word BORING is what usually comes to mind when I read textbooks for my classes. They are not something I look forward to because I typically drift off into never-never-land. Usually they're missing some dynamic, and as a result they just don't seem to capture my attention.
However, this textbook sparked a DIFFERENT reaction in me. First off, I found the futures and opinions market interesting and the material in the textbook easy to understand. It was teeming with examples and diagrams that enhanced my grasp on the fundamentals behind the market. Unlike other textbooks, I found that I ENJOYED the reading. In particular, I enjoyed the numerous real-world applications provided in the boxes throughout the chapters.
I believe the greatest asset in this book are these real-world applications like: how price movements in the orange juice markets market could forecast freezing temperatures better than the U.S. National Weather service, to the enormous role hedging plays for the airline industries. By intertwining stimulating examples into the required nitty-gritty, it held my attention. I thought reading this textbook was both educational and FUN. It sparked in me a new-found enthusiasm in futures and opinions.

Futures and Options Markets

This is written by a professor of agricultural economics at UC Davis. The guy has a Ph.d from Berkeley. He has taught a course called "Futures and Options Markets" for about 20 years. I took the course and read the whole book. Now that I am several years out from then and have learned a lot more about the subject, I have realized this book was way above average. The best selling books are not always the best. It doesn't go into depth about how to write options or use different derivative strategies, but it does provide a very secure introduction into the subject of futures and basic hedging with options. Basically the best read I had in my undergraduate years.
