Good Stories, Bad Book

This book was assigned to me for a college course I am taking, and I have to say that I am pretty disappointed with it. I own more short story anthologies than any 20 year old guy should, and this one definitely doesn't stack up. There is nothing wrong with the selection of stories here. Pickering did a good job of mixing up the heavy hitters with some less known but interesting pieces. I can't really criticize that (most important) aspect at all.
My problem, however, is with the book itself. The pages are like tissue paper, and it is extremely difficult to turn only one at a time. More than once I have been completely confused by a story, and read it two or three more times before realizing that I had skipped a page or more. The book cannot be thumbed through, or read with one hand, or read outside in the wind. This is extremely aggravating.
More aggravating still is the way Pickering abuses footnotes. Every time any geographical, artistic, or political allusion is made, the editor feels the need to explain it to the reader, even if the meaning is obvious from context and is entirely meaningless to the story. When a character passingly mentions the name of a nearby town, I don't want a commentary telling me where the town is supposed to be, or if the town is fictional or not. As a reader, I find this to be tremendously distracting. The abundance of extraneous footnotes have actually caused me to skip a few notes which offer important information. Perhaps these two flaws are merely issues of personal preference, but it seems that there are better anthologies on the market

This book has a nice balance of good, short fiction.

The book contains stories from authors as famous as Faulkner to some I have never heard of. All of the stories are interesting, and it's great for leisure or as a reference.

Good experience

The book was delivered quickly. I would recommend this seller to others. this was a required text for an online course that one of our students was taking. It was much less expensive to purchase it this way than through the provider.
