A life changer (if you let it change it)

This book had such influence in my life that I fell compelled to contact the author privately.The author will embark with you in a journey from your childhood to the present day. This journey is not intended to be filled with nostalgia and good vibes though, it will be vivid and - possibly - cruel as it was back then, but in the end you will understand how necessary it was to relive all of those memories. This book IS NOT the usual self-help book with tricks and things to say to yourself. Sure, it has some tips on how to get rid of some of the mental traps you're in, but the main purpose of this book is to understand deeply why you are feeling this way. Having this knowledge, you're already in the way to relief. "It's your birthright to be happy", it was only when I first read this in this book that I realized that deep inside of me I didn't feel I was worthwhile of any happiness at all. This book is now a must have for me. I have to re-read from time to time, to get me in the right track. I couldn't thank you enough, Terry. One of those books that make you notice they mean a lot to the author.

Important and Essential Work on Wargame Theory and History

It took a long time to finish this massive (over 800 pages and more than 50 chapters) and important work. For people who are involved in wargames, be they hobbyist, professional military, game designer, or merely curious, this is a fascinating look at the theory, history, and design aspects of wargames. It discusses both computer wargames (traditional videogames) and physical (hex and counter) wargames. Both popular (for consumers) and military (pretty much classified) are covered. It touches on reenactment and first person shooter games as well.

The chapters tend to be dense as there is a lot of information presented. Furthermore, that information made me think about it and the ramifications, so it is not a quick read. There are major names in wargame theory and design who have contributed. I wish the table of contents listed the contributors with their chapters, but if you expand the book description, you can find a list. Tetsuya Nakamura, Peter P. Perla, Thomas C. Schelling, Laurent Closier, and Philip Sabin are ones who wrote passages that I particularly enjoyed.

While I enjoyed the chapters on traditional wargames (as opposed to video/computer versions) the most, I can easily understand the ones on electronic versions. My friends who play such games tell me that those chapters are pretty standard in outlook. I found the outlook of some of the academics who study the people who play electronic wargames (as opposed to playing the games themselves for pleasure) to be predictable responses. However, the more theoretical chapters about design and theory of wargames more than made up for those less interesting to me. Also interesting were the ideas about using them in classrooms and how to market them to non-wargamers.

Who would like it? Anyone who enjoys wargames and the theory behind them. Game designers. Military wargamers. Historians who might be interested in military history. People who are involved in marketing wargames. It is well worth the time and effort to read it. It is a book I will long remember.

1.5 stars, a struggle to read this utterly boring book.

This could have been so much better, if it hadn't been so dreadfully boring! It was a story about nothing. Nothing, no emotion, hardly any connection and very little that actually happens. I don't remember the previous books in this series being so boring, so something just seemed to go off here. It could have been about two people falling in love, despite the huge differences in their lives, the distance, the separation, the beliefs, but no, alien and UFO chasing was the horse that was beaten to death here. Over and over again. The dialogue was so awkward, neither the H nor the h sounded real, it was as if this book was written with the purpose of putting me to sleep and it did. The worst part of this book was the Hero, he was so perfect he was boring too, and his role in the story was simply not enough to sustain my interest, almost like the non-hero of chick-lit. These books are quite formulaic and I am disappointed but it is time for me to stop reading this author's books.

another fabulous book!

I enjoy this author immensely! She is the only author that's an automatic buy for me. Books with a beginning, middle and end!!! Fantastic characters all thru the books with an added bonus of catching up with some of the old favorites from previous works.
BREE is quirky, sassy, confident (for the most part but who doesn't have moments of self-doubt) and protective of her town. Nick is generous, sweet, sexy and very protective of BREE. Two characters falling in love with the help of fate, letters and disagreements about aliens. :)

A grand, beautiful book of adventure and history

This wonderful book tells the stories of adventure and bravery that took place across the ages. Even in today's world, the bold, the intelligent, and the plain curious, suffer the afflictions of fools and tyrants who fear all and anything they cannot understand or control. But in ages past, when these blights on the human spirit not only clung to the idea of a flat world, where the water just fell of into the aether, they even punished with death those who dared to dream. Fortunately for us, the brave men and women of history flew in the face of fear and tyranny to pursue the truth and the fire in their own hearts.

For those who love books, not only for the wonders they reveal, but for their physical beauty, this one is a treasure. Printed on thick, quality stock, with vibrant and expertly done photography of navigational objects, charts and maps, illustrations, and more, this book will make proud addition to any library.

By the same publisher, is the book A History of Arctic Exploration. It is a twin sister to this one and I highly encourage the reader of such material to purchase them both. You will not be disappointed!

Not what I was expecting, but still good in ways

First off, this is a BIG and HEAVY book. It's 13 1/2" tall, and would not initially fit on my bookshelf. Luckily, my bookshelf has adjustable shelf levels, so with modifications, I could make it fit. This isn't a book that that you'd want to leave laying around, so I'm glad I could make it fit. I don't have a scale to weight it, but this is by far the heaviest book I own. It's not user-friendly for carrying around, and certainly isn't very portable. The thick pages and plentiful graphics are great, but add to the weight of this beastie.

I was hoping for more of a general nautical book, with nautical terms, descriptions of ship parts/components, descriptions of actual sailing and handling the sea, and coverage of America and New World sailors/privateers/pirates. I really found none of that in this book.

This book is actually narrow in scope, and focuses on navigation in the Old World. There is coverage of the Middle East and Asia, but that's pretty much it. Navigation is the focus, so not much in the way of commerce, privateering, leisure sailing, etc. What the book covers is very deep in scope, and the imagery and graphics are top notch. So if that is your specialty and interest, you'll like this book.

On the other hand, if you're looking for a book that will give you a taste of sea air and the feel of misty winds on your face, this isn't your book. This is a book generated from other books in the depths of libraries. That can be great too - and there's a place for books like this - but again, it wasn't what I was seeking. I found myself getting a bit bored about 1/4 through the book too, as it seems to sometimes repeat what was discussed prior. In summary, this book is a bit of a millstone in my collection, being big and bulky, and also an expensive purchase that I wasn't quite satisfied with (a bit of buyer's remorse).

Heartwarming

I had low expectations for this anthology, and it suprised me with its depth of plot, well-drawn characters, and good quality writing style.

The Man From Pine Mountain by Lisa Jackson is a lovely story about a couple who were unjustly torn apart several years earlier. As they cautiously find their way back to each other, they forge a path of healing the grief of the past, and come to a deeper understanding of the other, and of their community. The story has a spiritual componant, and a lot of action to keep it moving swiftly and effortlessly along. Wonderful!

Naughty or Nice by Emilie Richards is a very well-written story about a social worker at orphanage of troubled girls. A product of the foster care system herself, she tried to protect her young charges from the unpleasant issues she once faced by being rather cynical and tough. A kind-hearted family of contracters who donate their time renovating the orphanage teach her what it feels like to finally belong, and in turn, she learns to lighten-up and discover the magic of the holidays, and of life and love.

Holiday Homecoming by Joan Hohl is an interesting story about the holiday reconciliation of a family torn apart by the forbidden love between a stepbrother and stepsister. At times, the diaglogue/narrative was rather sexually crude, and I had to make a conscious effort not to allow it to distract me or turn me off from the much-welcomed and powerful lesson of forgiveness and acceptance!

A Kiss for Mr. Scrooge by Lucy Gordon is about a man who isolated himself from the world and the people who loved after an accident leaves him incapacitated. When he reconnects with his former fiancee, he must learn to live, love and trust again. This story contains many touching moments as the likeable characters work their way through the issues they face. Excellent!

bad taste in my mouth

I was disappointed. Most of the stories lacked character development and moved too slowly. Also they were lacking in romance.

Holiday Homecoming annoyed me the most. The so called hero almost had smex with his younger stepsister and would have had they not been interrupted by her father. His father told him to go way and he readily did. He did not stay to fight for her but left with his tale between his legs, a coward. He stays away for years, have smex with OW that included having relationships. The heroine of course, stays celibate, frozen in time waiting for him to return. It was sad. Eventually the hero mans up and returns over seven years later. He is a hypocrite, getting upset when he thinks another man had smex with her. I am so tired of reading books that include this sexist attitude and double standard. I will admit it sets me off and ruins my enjoyment for a story when a book includes this element. It was not the only story that did either, unfortunately. It just left a bad taste in my mouth. I would never read another story by this author.

Very Good Holiday Anthology

Unlike the second reviewer, I enjoyed this book. I think Joan Hohl's story was very unique in that it was a step-sister & step-brother that were the lovers in this story. No blood relation at all, yet it tore the family apart. Good writing. I enyoyed Emilie Richards story & Lucy Gordon's, but Lisa Jackson's didn't measure up in my estimation to the other three. All in all, I enjoyed the book for my holiday reading.
